Drawing on Julian Jayne’s theory of the origin of consciousness as an adaptation to otherness and the presenter’s studies on cult indoctrination, this presentation will consider some intercultural implications of the worldwide resurgence of populist authoritarianism.

Dr. Milton J. Bennett is a long-time proponent of constructivist approaches to developing intercultural consciousness, the topic of his text Basic Concepts of Intercultural Communication: Paradigms, Principles, & Practices and many other chapters and articles. He is a co-editor of an upcoming Sage series entitled Understanding the New Authoritarianism.
He is the executive director of the Intercultural Development Research Institute (IDRInstitute), co-located in Washington State, USA and Milan, Italy, a non-profit organization that sponsors constructivist research, seminars, and consulting in intercultural communication. Previously he was a tenured associate professor at Portland State University and a co-founder and director of the Intercultural Communication Institute in Portland, Oregon, which from 1986-2018 conducted the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication. He currently is an adjunct professor of intercultural communication in the department of sociology, University of Milano Bicocca in Italy.
