Claude Garcia and his team of experts with transdisciplinary backgrounds and intercultural experience believe that engaging stakeholders and fostering dialogue is critical to finding lasting solutions. Through their research on landscape governance and the drivers of change, Prof. Garcia and his team contribute to the understanding and transformation of policies and practices through the use of strategy games for dialogue and decision. The LEAF team, supported by R&D from BFH, the French Centre for International Research on Agronomy and Development (CIRAD) and ETH Zurich, helps people, companies and international institutions to address wicked problems and make more informed decisions. With the collective Planet C, Claude supports a citizen science dialogue on governance and the ecological transition in France, Switzerland, and hopefully soon the rest of Europe.

In his presentation, Claude will provide insights into his research projects and a selection of tools assisting transformative change in a world that is becoming more and more complex.

This session will take place directly after our Annual General Meeting, and is open to both members and non-members. It will be followed by a networking apéro.

If you wish to participate, please register no later than Friday, January 26, 2024 by sending an email to welcome@sietar.ch.

About the Speaker:

Claude Garcia is a tropical ecologist by training, but it is a long time since he measured a tree. He is Professor of International Forest Governance at the Berner Fachhochschule (BFH). Previously, he led the Forest Management and Development Team at ETH Zürich in Switzerland and worked as junior and senior scientist for the French International Centre of Research and Agronomy for Development (CIRAD). He has 20 years of expertise working in multi-cultural environments. And, unsurprisingly, he plays games.

PIM (Policy and International Forest Management – BFH) offers practice-oriented research and consultancy in the field of forest policy and international forest management and governance. At the international level it works on sustainable forest management, specifically on forest landscape restoration, forests and climate, agroforestry, community-based forestry and global forest policy. We currently focus on West Africa, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and Ukraine.

LEAF is the result of more than eight years of research in partnership between the French International Centre of Research and Agronomy for Development (CIRAD), ETH Zurich, and more recently BFH, during which the team around Claude developed, implemented and refined tools and methods to support people across the world addressing complex problems.

Planet C is carried by a collective of experts and an amazing community of facilitators that join forces to transform the society from within. It hosts researchers, experts and facilitators from French and Swiss research institutes, universities, associations and consultancies. They are experts in the fields of ecology, social justice and resource management, and are experienced in facilitating immersive processes and creating safe spaces for learning.
