The category of the stranger has experienced a renaissance in contemporary social theory and the presentation will explore the nature of this renaissance via the work of Georg Simmel, Robert Park and Zygmunt Bauman. Vince Marotta will specifically examine how these scholars have contributed to this body of work through ideas such as the cosmopolitan stranger, the intellectual as stranger and the hybrid subject. The presentation will demonstrate how these ideas have implications for the sociology of knowledge and intercultural dialogue. The final part of the talk will investigate how theories of the stranger can be applied to discussions on the cyborg, multiculturalism and intercultural knowledge.

Vince Marotta is an Associate Professor in sociology at Deakin University (Australia) and Co-managing Editor of the Journal of Intercultural Studies (Routledge). He has recently edited a book (with Martina Boese) entitled Critical Reflections on Migration, ‘Race’ and Multiculturalism: Australia in a Global Context’‘ (Routledge) and his article ‘The migration experience: an analytical discussion’ has just been accepted in the European Journal of Social Theory.
